The way most brands measure YouTube Creator ads is broken
Most brands run YouTube Creator programs with the same measurement stack they use everywhere else: discount codes, UTMs, pixels, last-touch attribution. The problem isn't that these tools are bad. It's that they were never built for YouTube.
No pixel fires on a view. A viewer has to actively click a link before any tracking can occur — and most don't. They watch, absorb, and act later, searching for the brand or converting through a completely different path. The Creator gets zero credit. Across 50 Agentio brands spending $2–10M per year on Creators, MMM-measured performance is 1.2x–5x better than what traditional attribution reports. 4 out of 10 top-performing Creators would not be renewed under standard attribution.
Two questions. Two tools.
The core mistake most Brands make is trying to answer two fundamentally different questions with one tool.
Is this channel worth investing in? This is a budget allocation question, and only a properly configured MMM answers it with statistical confidence. A few things to get right: YouTube Creators should represent at least 5% of your total marketing budget for the model to isolate the channel's effect. Feed it amortized spend distributed over the view curve of each video - or at minimum over 90 days - not the flat upfront fee. And make sure your MMM isn't calibrated using geo-testing: Creator audiences can't be cleanly geo-split, so the experiment doesn't work.
Which Creators should I renew? MMMs answer the channel question. They almost never answer the Creator question - individual Creators are too small to register as statistically meaningful variables at scale. For Creator-level ranking, triangulate two signals: pixels capture the click-through converters, and Post-Purchase Surveys (PPS) capture the watch-and-search-later majority that pixels miss entirely. Across Agentio Brands, 73% of PPS responses represent net new orders invisible to last-touch and pixel attribution. Combined and deduplicated, they produce a ranking you can actually trust.
If you don't have an MMM yet
Start here: set up a PPS and fire pixels immediately. Every week without them is data you can't recover - and both are straightforward to implement instantly.
For channel-level performance, you have two options while you build toward an MMM. You can treat pixel ROAS as a floor and apply a conservative 1.5x–3x multiplier for internal reporting - not a precise number, but a more honest directional read than taking pixel ROAS at face value. Or you can extrapolate your Post-Purchase Survey results: with a response rate of around 30%, PPS responses can be scaled up to estimate total channel contribution without an MMM in place.
For Creator comparison, the pixels + PPS triangulation works just as well without an MMM. For each Creator, combine and deduplicate what your pixels captured with what PPS attributed. That combined signal is a reliable basis for renewal decisions - something most MMMs can't give you at the individual Creator level anyway.
And drop discount codes as your primary measurement tool. They only capture viewers who both remembered the code and used it - and codes leak, making both channel-level performance and Creator-to-Creator comparison unreliable.
One important note: a multiplier-adjusted pixel ROAS is not real measurement. It's a way to make directional budget decisions while you build toward something more rigorous. The goal is an MMM. This is the bridge.
